Financial Support for Parents in Malta: What I Wish I'd Known

When you're expecting a baby, everyone talks about nappies, prams and sleepless nights... but no one really tells you about all the paperwork and financial support that's available.
I'll be honest I had no idea where to start. Between looking after a newborn and trying to recover, the last thing I wanted was to spend hours searching government websites.
So, I thought I'd put everything I learned in one place. Hopefully, this saves you some time and gives you one less thing to worry about.
(Please remember that benefits and eligibility can change, so always double-check the latest information on the official Maltese government websites.)
Child Allowance
One of the first things you'll probably hear about is the Child Allowance.
This is financial support provided by the Maltese government to help families with the cost of raising children.
The amount you receive depends on your family's circumstances and income, so it isn't the same for everyone.
My advice? Once your baby's birth is registered, keep an eye on your paperwork and make sure everything has been processed correctly. If you're unsure, don't be afraid to contact the Department of Social Security they're there to help.
Looking for more support as a new mum?
Having a baby changes so much your finances, your routine, your priorities and sometimes even your sense of yourself.
At Baby Wearers Malta, we believe mums need community too. Come along with your baby, move your body and meet other mums who are navigating this new chapter alongside you.

Child Birth Bonus
This was one of those things I only discovered after speaking to other mums.
If you're eligible, Malta offers a one time Child Birth Bonus to help with the costs of welcoming your baby.
At the time of writing, the payments are:
€1,000 for your first child
€1,500 for your second child
€2,000 for your third child and any children after that
Every family's situation is different, so it's worth checking whether you qualify.
Maternity Benefits
This part can be a little confusing because there are different types of maternity payments.
Depending on your employment situation, you may be entitled to a Maternity Benefit or a Maternity Leave Benefit.
If you're employed, your employer will usually guide you through the process, but if you're self-employed or your situation is a little different, it's definitely worth reading the official guidance before your due date.
Other Financial Support
Something I learned is that the Child Allowance isn't the only support available.
Depending on your circumstances, you may also qualify for other benefits or family schemes.
For example, there are additional supports for some families, as well as the Free Childcare Scheme, which I'll be covering in another blog because it deserves one all by itself!
A Tip From One Mum to Another
If I could give one piece of advice, it would be this:
Don't wait until your baby arrives to start looking into the paperwork.
The first few weeks are beautiful, but they're also exhausting.
If you can spend time before your due date understanding what's available, your future self will thank you.
Where Can You Find the Latest Information?
Government benefits can change, so I always recommend checking the official websites for the most up to date information before applying.
That way, you know you're looking at the latest eligibility criteria, payment amounts and application process.
I hope this gives you a good starting point and makes everything feel a little less overwhelming.
Motherhood comes with enough surprises you shouldn't have to spend hours trying to figure out paperwork too.
